October Update and Fall Economic Statement
November 1, 2022
Dear friends,

Inflation is hitting folks hard in our community.

I’ve heard from families with young children, seniors living on a fixed income and young people who are having a tough time making ends meet.

While Canada is not alone in facing this global inflation crisis, largely spurred by the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine and the COVID-19 pandemic, our government is taking active measures to help those struggling the most in Canada.

Since returning to Parliament in September, we’ve introduced legislation to double the GST tax credit for low-income Canadians for six months, which will support 11 million Canadians.

There is legislation currently before the House of Commons to provide dental care to low-income children as well as support for low-income renters. This is in addition to the more generous Canada Child Benefit and Climate Action Incentive rebate payments that Ontario families and households receive from the federal government.

Moreover, since July, Old Age Security for Canadians 75 and over has increased 10 per cent.

By December of this year, child-care fees in Ontario will be reduced by 50 per cent.

This is all real money that is helping Canadians of all ages with the high cost of living we are experiencing.

Today, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, released the 2022 Fall Economic Statement. You can read the full speech here.

The statement builds the work already underway to make life more affordable, build an economy that works for all Canadians, and ensure we are prepared for what lies ahead.

The 2022 Fall Economic Statement will continue to make life more affordable for people and build an economy that works for all Canadians.

We are investing in Canadians: from permanently eliminating interest on student and apprentice loans, to helping people buy their first home and continuing to attract investment in our clean economy and create good jobs. Read below to learn more.

Just as the federal government was there for individual Canadians, families and organizations, throughout the height of the COVID-19 pandemic with CERB, the wage subsidy, vaccines, PPE and other supports, we will continue to be there for Canadians as we address inflation and work towards making life more affordable.

Sincerely,

The Honourable Karina Gould
Member of Parliament
