March Update
April 5, 2022
Dear Friends,

On March 28th, I was proud to announce that the federal government finally reached an agreement with the province of Ontario to provide families access to high-quality and affordable early learning and childcare. This offer has been on the table with the Government of Ontario since last July and is all federal funding. Families in Ontario will now be joining families across the country to receive more affordable childcare.

In Ontario, that means families with children in licensed childcare will see an average fee reduction of 50% by the end of this year. As both the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and a mom in Ontario, I am so thrilled to have brought forward this historic, transformative social program that will immensely benefit our children, families and our economy in Ontario and in Canada.

Our government will continue to take action to fight climate change, create jobs, and ensure that Canadians are global leaders in the transition to clean industries and technologies. On March 29th, we announced the Emissions Reductions Plan, that will go sector by sector to cut emissions and create opportunity on the path to net-zero-by 2050. This includes making important investments right here in our community of Burlington. I was delighted to announce an exciting investment in Westinghouse Canada Inc. to support their next-generation SMRs.
In the face of COVID-19 Canadians know how important our healthcare system is. This month, we introduced a $2 billion transfer to provinces and territories to help address the backlogs in our health system as a result of the pandemic. Unfortunately, as much as we would like for the pandemic to be over, COVID-19 is almost as prevalent in our community than it was at the height of the Omicron wave. Let’s keep doing our part, wearing our masks in crowded public spaces and protecting those who are most vulnerable in our communities. For the most up to date information of COVID-19 protections and travel guidelines, please visit the Government of Canada website.

My office is once again our free tax clinic service for low-income residents in Burlington until April 30th, 2022. For more information, please visit my website. You can also register for the tax clinic by calling 289-427-6207 and our volunteers will be delighted to help. Finally, the war in Ukraine has been devastating to witness. This past weekend the world was horrified to learn of the massacre in Bucha and the atrocities committed by the Russian occupiers in Ukrainian towns and cities that have now been retaken by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. I want to assure you that the Government of Canada continues to stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. For a detailed list of supports and actions the Government of Canada has taken please see below. The Minister of Foreign Affairs has clearly stated we will hold Putin to account for the crimes against humanity he has committed.

Sincerely,
The Honourable Karina Gould
