In late October, I was honoured to be sworn in as Burlington's Member of Parliament and appointed as the Minister of Families, Children, and Social Development.

As minister, I have been working hard to continue the progress made by my colleague, Minister Ahmed Hussen, in delivering on a Canada-Wide Early Learning and Childcare System.

Every child deserves the best possible start in life. Our vision and objectives for early learning and child care are quite simple: reduce child-care fees in the next five years, create more spaces, ensure equitable access for all children and grow a strong and skilled early childhood educator workforce.

Earlier this month, the province of Alberta signed on to the federal government’s Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care System, making them the ninth jurisdiction that will have $10-a-day, high-quality and inclusive care for children.

This agreement with Alberta shows that with a willing partner on the table, we can get things done.

Families in Ontario deserve the same, and a fair deal is on the table.

With some of the most expensive child-care fees in the country, Ontario families simply cannot afford to wait.

Affordable child care is good for kids, good for parents, especially mothers, and good for our economy. The women’s movement has known these facts for 50 years, and the COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare just how important child care is.

High-quality, affordable and accessible child care is essential to our economic recovery. It’s time to get it done.

As we move into the holiday season, I encourage all of you to enjoy the festive activities Burlington has to offer and support small businesses.

There is so much our community has to offer, including the Festival of Lights down at Spencer Smith Park, tours at the Ireland House and the first Burlington Holiday Market in Village Square.

Local businesses are the heart of our communities. Shopping local will help our economy recover more quickly from COVID-19.

As we work to get through this pandemic, we all have a role to play, and the government continues to support all small business owners and entrepreneurs across the country.
