October Update
October 31, 2021

Dear friends,

This month, I was honoured to be sworn in as Burlington's Member of Parliament and appointed as the Minister of Families, Children, and Social Development.

I look forward to delivering on the Government of Canada's promise of affordable daycare for families across the country and to continue the important work of poverty alleviation here in Canada. Investing in early learning and child care offers a jobs-and-growth hat trick: it provides jobs for workers, the majority of whom are women; it enables parents, particularly mothers, to reach their full economic potential; and it creates a generation of engaged and well prepared young learners.

I am committed to working tirelessly with my cabinet colleagues to build a stronger, more inclusive Canada for everyone. Canadians need a strong and diverse Cabinet to finish the fight against COVID-19, deliver on $10/ day childcare, take real action to tackle the climate crisis, help Canadians afford a home of their own, and make important strides on reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.

I am thrilled to continue this important work on the issues that matter the most to you.

October is home to Small Business Week. This year, I attended the Burlington Chamber of Commerce's networking event, and stopped by some local businesses to chat with the owners and pickup some goodies! I encourage everyone to #ShopLocal.

The end of October marks the requirement that employers in the federally regulated air, rail, and marine transportation sectors establish vaccination policies for their employees. Also effective October 30th is the requirement that travellers departing from Canadian airports, and travellers on VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer trains be fully vaccinated. Our Government is committed to keeping transportation employees and travellers safe and secure.

Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland announced that our Government is taking targeted action to create jobs and spur economic growth. This includes moving from the very broad-based support that was appropriate at the height of lockdowns to more targeted measures that will provide help where it is needed, while prudently managing government spending.

Our Government, and my office will continue to be here for you. I am here to help you navigate federal programs and listen to your thoughts and concerns.

Sincerely,

The Honourable Karina Gould
