Statement on Anti-LGBTQ2+ Discrimination in Burlington, ON - June 4, 2021

Last night, I was made aware of instances of discrimination and hatred in Burlington towards the LGBTQ2+ community. This week there have been reports of pride flags being vandalized and stolen as well as individuals and families who have received hateful letters delivered to their homes. I am appalled and deeply concerned to have learned that people have been targeted in their own homes.

Everyone deserves to feel safe, welcome, and accepted in our community. In the face of these actions, we must stand together and call for respect, tolerance, and inclusion; here in Burlington, and across Canada. The LGBTQ2+ community should feel safe and welcome in their own homes, their neighbourhoods, their city and their country.

Now, during Pride month, it is even more important for us to acknowledge that we still have work to do here in Burlington, in Canada to ensure a truly welcoming and inclusive community.  As the Prime Minister said: “we will continue to support each other in our fight for equality because we know that Canada gets stronger every single day that we choose to embrace diversity.”

To the LGBTQ2+ community here in Burlington: I stand with you. I proudly fly the flag and I will stand with, beside and up for you at all times.

I encourage all of you to #FlyTheFlag, because #LoveIsLove.

If you or someone you know has been been a victim of vandalism, harassment or discrimination please report it to the Halton Police at 905-825-47775.

Police also encourage anyone with information about these incidents to call the non-emergency line at 905-825-47775. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers  at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or through the web at www.haltoncrimestoppers.ca.

Sincerely,
