Opinion: Building a Better Canada, Together
September 25, 2020

We have faced an unprecedented pandemic, and I am immensely proud of our community's response and resilience.

Burlington has displayed strength and compassion during these difficult times.

Over the past six months, the federal government has been there to support individuals, businesses and community organizations to get through the worst of the pandemic. As we brace ourselves for a second wave, the Government of Canada will continue to be there for you and your family, every step of the way.

As you do your part to help stop the spread of COVID-19, we will do ours to support you. Your health, safety and economic well-being are our top priority.

Our approach will have four foundations:

1. Fighting the pandemic and saving lives;

2. Supporting people and businesses through the crisis;

3. Building back better; and

4. Standing up for who we are as Canadians.

This is an ambitious plan for an unprecedented time.

The federal government is committed to bold plans to ensure that Canadians are better supported. This includes giving parents access to affordable, inclusive and high-quality child care and taking action on extreme risks from climate change.

We will also address gaps in our social systems by protecting seniors, bringing forward a new disability benefit, creating a more resilient health-care system and adding to the National Housing Strategy.

Steps to address systemic racism will also be taken by moving forward to support permanent transformative change.

Together, we will work to build a Canada that is stronger, healthier and safer. A Canada that is fairer and more inclusive, and one that is clean and competitive. We will do what it takes to protect the health and safety of Canadians and to support Canadians and businesses for as long as it takes to build back a more resilient Canada.

Because to build a Canada that works for everyone, we will need to take bold action on health, the economy, equality and the environment.

This is the time to remember who we are as Canadians. This is our opportunity to contain the global crisis and build back better, together.
