Opinion: Happy Canada Day, Burlington
June 28, 2020

Usually on Canada Day, I would be stopping by neighbourhood block parties, enjoying the celebrations in Spencer Smith Park, attending citizenship ceremonies, stopping by our museum, lawn bowling club and farmer’s market to celebrate with you right across our community.

Although, I, like many of you, will miss these events, celebrating our beautiful country is still an important occasion.

The City of Burlington will be hosting a virtual Canada Day Celebration featuring musical guests and activities you and your family can participate in. For further details, I encourage you to visit burlington.ca/canadaday.

As we mark Canada’s anniversary of Confederation, this holiday offers a time for reflection. In our country’s history, many wrongs have taken place that still need to be corrected. This has never been more apparent than in the difficult events we have seen in recent weeks. Canada is not immune to the lasting legacies of racism and colonialism, and we must commit ourselves as a nation to continue to do better.

Whether you are a new Canadian or lived here your whole life, we all remain connected by the same bond and strive for the same values of a peaceful and just society.

We want to know our children and families are safe and have a fair chance at success. We want to breathe clean air and not worry about job security. We want to live in a free society, where our rights are upheld.

We want to hope, dream, aspire and have the possibility to achieve our goals. Let’s continue to commit to building this ideal which Canada aspires to be.

I also want to take this occasion to announce that as we enter the next phase of reopening here in Burlington, my office will be open by appointment only beginning on July 2. To stay up-to-date, email [email protected] or call my office at 905-639-5757 and my team and I will be happy to help.
