COVID-19 Update May 31st
May 31, 2020

Dear Friends,

It is hard to believe that tomorrow is already June 1st. I know the last few months have been challenging and as the weather improves, it is only becoming more difficult to practice physical distancing but our efforts are paying off. As every day passes, we continue to make progress and get closer to our goal of eradicating COVID-19.

While we may be closer to our goal, it does not mean that we can ease our efforts. It may seem harmless having a few friends or neighbours gather on a nice sunny day to enjoy one another’s company, however, it is all too easy to revert to our normal habit of gathering close to one another and putting ourselves and those we care about at risk of contracting COVID-19.

Here in Burlington, Joseph Brant Hospital is activating a plan to see a gradual increase in surgical, procedural, and onsite, outpatient care in the hospital. Within program areas patients will be prioritized on the bases of acuity and need with the Hospital continuing to use virtual care technology where possible and appropriate. As appointments and procedures are resumed, patients will be contacted directly by their clinic or physician’s office and those patients who have concerns about their health status should contact their clinic or physician’s office for guidance. As always, if you are experiencing serious symptoms please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. For further information, please consult the link found here.

If you are concerned you have COVID-19, you can get tested at the Joseph Brant Hospital COVID-19 Assessment Centre. To ensure physical distancing and avoid crowding, testing at the Centre is by appointment only. To book an appointment, please call (905) 632-3737 ext. 6550 and leave a message with your name and contact information. You will then be called back to arrange an appointment.

Over the past week, a number of Burlington residents have contacted my office asking when they will be receiving the one time Old Age Security and Guaranteed Income Supplement Payments. This one time payment will be a separate payment to the OAS and GIS cheques that seniors receive at the end of each month. I can assure you that these payments will be delivered automatically as soon as possible and that beneficiaries do not need to apply. Further details will be available soon.

On June 4th at 6pm, the City of Burlington will once again be hosting a Telephone Town Hall where Burlingtonians are able to engage with local officials on the COVID-19 Pandemic. For more information and details on how to participate, please consult the link found here.

As we progress through June and the temperatures increase, I ask that you continue to check in on your friends and neighbours who may be vulnerable due to heat. Managing summer heat can be challenging and with COVID-19, it is even more complex. While I know it can get a little uncomfortable, please continue to wear a mask when physical distancing is not possible and ensure to be courteous when using our community’s public spaces.

We all have a part to play in combatting the spread of COVID-19.

Sincerely,

Hon. Karina Gould
