Opinion: We're Here to Help you
April 3, 2020

These are unprecedented times we are living in. Know that the Government of Canada has your back.

Protecting the health and safety of Canadians, jobs and our economy is the top priority of the Government of Canada. No Canadian should have to choose between protecting their health, putting food on the table, paying for their medication or caring for a family member. That is why our government has taken action to support workers and their families with the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB).

To be nimble and support the maximum number of Canadians, we have streamlined income supports temporarily, whether EI-eligible or not, to the CERB. The CERB will be paid in four-week instalments for up to 16 weeks during the period of March 15 to October 3, 2020.

The CERB will cover Canadians who have lost their job, are sick, are in quarantine or are taking care of someone who is sick with COVID-19, as well as working parents who must stay home without pay to care for children who are sick or at home because of school and daycare closures.

For more information on the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, or the Government of Canada’s response to COVID-19, please visit Canada.ca/covid19 or contact my office at [email protected], or leave a voice mail at (905) 639-5757.

During these extraordinary times, the Government of Canada will revise and adjust our response as necessary to support the health, safety and economic well-being of Canadians.

We are all in this fight together. Thank you to the extraordinary people of Burlington for your contribution to this effort. In times of crisis, we are called upon to act. That takes courage. Right now, as the prime minister has said, your civic duty, your call to action, is to follow the advice and guidance of public health. That way we can stop the spread of COVID-19, protect our most vulnerable and protect those who are going to work every day to keep us safe.

Be well and reach out if you need help. My team and I are here to support you.
