COVID-19 Economic Response
March 19, 2020

Dear Friends,

Our Government is unwavering in our commitment to support Canadians, our healthcare system, and our economy. In these extraordinary times, no Canadian should have to worry about paying their bills, rent, or putting food on the table.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Trudeau announced Canada's economic action plan to help Canadians facing hardship as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

This first phase of Canada's COVID-19 Economic Response Plan provides immediate help to those Canadians and businesses that are most in need. These measures represent over $82 billion of direct support to Canadian workers and businesses. This new set of economic measures will help to stabilize the economy during this challenging period.

This wide-ranging support will help ensure Canadians can pay for rent and groceries, and help businesses continue to pay their employees and their bills during this time of uncertainty. This plan builds on coordinated action taken since the beginning of this outbreak, including the more than $1 billion COVID-19 Response Fund, and over $500 billion in additional credit and liquidity support for people and businesses.

In recent days, a lot of you have taken the time to call my office sharing your concerns regarding your employment or your ability to run your business. It is through these first steps that we will be able to stabilize our economy and determine the next steps in getting Canada back on track.

In order to follow through on our COVID-19 Economic Response Plan, our Government will be tabling emergency legislation to provide timely support to Canadians. This will also ensure that we have all the tools to support individuals and businesses as things continue to evolve during these uncertain times.

We are in this together, and our Government will not hesitate to use every tool at our disposal to support Canadians.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office for additional information. As you may recall, my office is presently closed to the public. I encourage you to leave us a voicemail at (905) 639-5757 or email at [email protected]

Please continue to practice Social Distancing. It is crucial if we are going to stem the spread of COVID-19. We are in a good position right now in Canada, but it is up to each of us to stop the virus in its tracks. Please only buy what you need at the grocery store and the pharmacy. Do not call public health or telehealth if you do not present symptoms, and only go to the doctor or the hospital if you require medical attention. We must ensure that our systems are available for those who need immediate care. Our most vulnerable are counting on you.

I am so proud of our community. It has been heart warming to see the many local organizations changing their operations to continue to cater to the needs of Burlingtonians and for community members on Facebook groups, such as this one, to step up and make sure our neighbours are taken care of.

Burlington, we're all in this together. No matter who you are or what you do, this is a time where you should be focused on your health and the health of those you love, not whether you're going to lose your job or run out of money for things like groceries and medication. The Government of Canada stands with you. If we can continue to make these sacrifices, we can mitigate the effects of COVID-19 and help to #flattenthecurve.

Please continue to check canada.ca/covid19 for the most recent updates, my website for new announcements from the Government of Canada and Halton Region Public Health for the latest information locally.

Sincerely,

Karina
