Opinion: We Want to Hear From You
January 27, 2020

A strong economy starts with a strong middle class and a responsible fiscal plan.

Earlier this month, the Minister of Finance, the Hon. Bill Morneau, launched the pre-budget consultation process, inviting Canadians to offer their ideas on how we can continue to create jobs, grow the middle class and create an economy that works for everyone.

Over the last four years, our government has listened to Canadians and put in place a plan built by Canadians, for Canadians. As we build on these successes we are inviting you to contribute your ideas on how to continue growing our economy. We remain focused on moving forward with the issues that matter most to you including: protecting our environment, keeping Canadians safe and healthy, and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.

Our economy is sound and growing at a solid pace, but we understand that some Canadians are finding it difficult to make ends meet. It is through these consultations that we want to hear from you, about your concerns, on how to continue to make life more affordable and how to build a stronger future for our children.

Participating in the pre-budget consultation is a great way to have a direct impact and help guide our government’s plan forward. If you wish to submit your opinion to Budget 2020, I encourage you to visit the website at budget.gc.ca/2020/pre-budget-prebudgetaire/index-en.html or via email [email protected].

Last year, I was thrilled to see how engagement in this process works. Because of their advocacy efforts — that began right here in Burlington — the Federal Government provided $10 million in funding to Ovarian Cancer Canada and $150 million to the Terry Fox Foundation for research that will help save lives.

I encourage you to participate in the Budget 2020 consultations. Remember, as Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” I look forward to your ideas and working to support you to improve the lives of Canadians.

If you have any questions, or comments, please do not hesitate to contact my office. I look forward to hearing about Burlington’s priorities for #YourBudget 2020.
