Karina Gould
Hon. Karina Gould
Member of Parliament for Burlington
December Update
January 1, 2020
Dear Friends,

On December 5th, the House of Commons returned for the sitting of the 43rd Parliament. It is an honour to be able to return to the the House of Commons as your representative for Burlington. As I took to my seat, I was humbled while looking around the Chamber to see other returning Members of Parliament and those who are newly elected. Once again, you have trusted me to serve as your representative and I will continue to act on behalf of our community in Parliament to move Burlington, and Canada, forward.

The first day back in the House of Commons saw the election of the new Speaker, the Hon. Anthony Rota, Member of Parliament for Nipissing - Timiskaming. It is the role of the Speaker of the House of Commons to ensure the orderly flow of business and that parliamentary rules and traditions are followed. In addition to the election of the new Speaker, the Speech from the Throne was delivered by the Governor General, her Excellency, the Right Honourable Julie Payette at the Senate of Canada Building in the former Ottawa Train Station.

On October 21st, Canadians sent Parliamentarians back to Ottawa to work together and address common goals of fighting climate change, continuing down the road of reconciliation; keeping Canadians safe and healthy; and positioning Canada for success in an uncertain world. Canadians have chosen to keep moving forward and the Speech from the Throne is our plan to do just that. Together, we can and we will overcome the challenges of today to build a brighter tomorrow. Another important milestone in the formation of a new parliament is the delivery of mandate letters to Cabinet. As the Minister of International Development, I received my mandate letter on Friday November 13th highlighting my role in leading Canada's efforts to reduce global poverty and inequality, providing humanitarian assistance, helping the world's poor adapt to climate change, and supporting displaced persons, particularly with access to education. I am thrilled to embark on this next chapter and look forward to resuming my work with International Development that I started as a Parliamentary Secretary in 2015.

Here in Burlington, holiday celebrations are well under way. On November 29th, I was once again at Burlington City Hall to flip the switch and turn on the Festival of Lights that illuminates our downtown every year. It was so great to see so many of you getting into the holiday spirit!

I look forward to seeing you all throughout the coming weeks and over the Holidays. I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas, Happy Channukah, and all the best for the New Year.

Sincerely,

Karina
