Yesterday, the Prime Minister announced that the Government of Canada is invoking the Emergencies Act to help end the illegal blockades across Canada.
This decision was not taken lightly. The Emergencies Act is never the first thing the government should do, but due to current circumstances, it is clear that actions must be taken.
The blockades in Ottawa and across the country are illegal and must end. Canadians have the right to protest peacefully; breaking the law and blocking critical infrastructure is not peaceful protest.
This important step taken by the federal government will support provinces and territories in ending the illegal blockades, protecting our critical infrastructure and protecting Canadians. This decision was made following extensive consultation with cabinet, caucus, premiers from all provinces and territories and opposition leaders.
These measures are targeted, measured and temporary. They’re proportionate to these urgent circumstances and are part of a responsible and scalable approach.
We will continue to support law enforcement at all levels to end the blockades and uphold the law.
We will always defend the rights of Canadians to peaceful assembly, and to freedom of expression. However, these illegal blockades are affecting those who have worked so hard to recover from economic damage caused by COVID-19. We are focused on moving forward to protect Canadian businesses and the economy.

Minister Freeland also announced new measures as part of invoking the Emergencies Act that are focused on stopping the financing of these illegal blockades. You can learn more, and read Minister Freeland’s speech here.
To anyone that is participating in the blockades, it is time to go home. These blockades must come to an end.
