February Update
March 1, 2021

As February comes to a close, I have reflected on the importance of Black History Month in Canada.

Black history is Canadian history. I’ve had conversations with constituents on the progress that has been made, and the steps we still need to take.

This year’s theme, The Future is Now, gave us all a chance to celebrate and acknowledge the transformative work that Black Canadians and their communities are doing now.

Local organizations in Halton such as the Burlington Caribbean Connection, the Halton Black History Awareness Society, the African Caribbean Council of Halton and One Burlington are integral to raising awareness and building a better future in Halton, and the rest of Canada.

As we celebrate the remarkable achievements and strides of the Black community in Canada, we must all be reminded of our collective duty to continue to combat racism in all its forms in a way that is informed by Black history, voices and lived experiences.

We have also seen a ramp up in what will be the “big lift” of vaccines coming into Canada. Last Friday, Health Canada approved the AstraZeneca-Oxford COVID-19 vaccine for use in Canada - a landmark moment in our fight against COVID-19. We also secured 2 million doses of the CoviShield vaccine, a version of AstraZeneca developed by Oxford University and the Serum Institute of India and sponsored in Canada by Mississauga’s Verity Pharmaceuticals.

We have distributed more than 2.4 million vaccines in Canada to date, with hundreds of thousands of doses being received each week. With Pfizer, Moderna, and now AstraZeneca, Canada is set to receive more than 6.5 million doses before the end of March, and tens of millions more doses between April and June. We are on track to have doses in this country for all Canadians by the end of September.

The federal government has also secured a deal with Novavax to produce tens of millions of vaccine doses right here in Canada. This is critical to ensuring that Canada will have the capacity to produce vaccines in the future.

As we continue the vaccine rollout in Canada, I continue to thank you for following the advice of our local public health officials. These are challenging times. We will get through this.

Sincerely,
